Jón Gunnar Árnason

Jón Gunnar Árnason 1931-1989
Born in Reykjavík. Studied at the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts in Reykjavík in 1945-46. Graduated as a mechanician from the Reykjavík Technical College 1952. Studied at the Hornsey College of fine Art in London 1965-67.

He is the artist of one of Reykjavík´s most famous sculptures,
"The Sun Voyager", that I think every traveler that comes to Reykjavík sees. It´s hard to miss, as it stands on its own on the seashore.

The photos of The Sun Voyager, with the exception of one other, are the only photos of his work that i was able to find on the internet. Then again, they were in plenty, only problem was which one to choose!

Here you can view some of the many photos of The Sun Voyager, from a group that calles itself The Sólfar Group

This is the other photo I managed to find

One of his works can indeed be viewed in my work-place Hótel Frón, a big cast iron work on the theme of The Battle of Persepolis (not vikings, even though everybody thinks so at first glance) upon one wall of the lobby!

This is interesting, because I am trying to learn more about Jón Gunnar Árnason. I've started a group on Flickr for people to share photographs of Sólfar, but I hadn't seen any of his other works.

Having read about the performance the vulcano on Eyafjalla is giving to Europe, I have remembered the works of Jón-Gunnar Árnason, seen also in Finland. And set a link to this site.

I have never heard of Jón Gunnar Árnason, but I like his work, I mean the work I have seen on this post through the pictures you have posted and his work reminded of a Dali's surrealist painting somehow. I paint one I get inspired, my last painting is called Sildenafil and I plan on giving it to my wife

Jon Gunnar was my uncle and I remember helping him weld some of his works during the late 1960's and early 1970's. He was a very interesting and conflicted man--complained about the influence of man (industry) on nature but always imagined how a landscape could be changed for the better by shifting a stream or grading. He's not as well known for it, but he did plenty of work in wood to make ends meet. I believe a staircase in Hotel Holt is his work. He also did stone masonry. I remember him for playing chess to the wee hours of the night, the smell of drinking and cigarettes, weeks on Flatey, arguing about the Americans at Keflavik and fishing. He also had a cute daughter (Pollyanna) with a prior wife who was my first crush.

Interesting, Paul Griggs!
I got acquinted with Jón-Gunnar in Germany - for about 40 years ago. He was a charming person and a distinctiv, multifaceted artis. Several years ago an Icelandic artist had at an exhibition in Helsinkin a painting called Homage to Jón-Gunnar Arnason - I don´t remember the name of that artist. But for instance the works by Olafur Eliasson, that I have seen - with regrett only as pictures in papers - also owe a whole lot to Jón-Gunnar.
